Gasport Background Study
103 soil samples were taken from 25 different locations in Gasport in May 2002 and analyzed at an independent laboratory for soil arsenic levels. Some samples were also analyzed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The Agencies requested this study to provide new data for a new estimate of typical or “background” soil arsenic levels in eastern Niagara County.
The sampling locations chosen represented four different property types: wooded / overgrown / agricultural / crop, commercial / industrial, orchard and residential / public land. The range of sampling results for each property type can be seen here – Gasport Soil Sampling Results.
Results from the Gasport study are included in reports that FMC prepared for the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the New York State Department of Health and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. These documents are available to the public at the document repository on the second floor of the Middleport Free Library at 9 South Vernon Street.
